While some of the people we meet while travelling might be more about the fun than friends for life, making new acquaintances can be very rewarding. Two years ago, while on a 2 week retreat in Margaret River WA, I met a French woman who I felt a connection to. We shared a very special moment when she discovered she was pregnant during that time, and although I’ve not seen her since we still correspond regularly and exchange gifts for our children’s birthdays. Spending your holiday in a rental house or a swanky hotel may not give you and your children the same opportunities to met new friends as perhaps around a resort pool, in the kids play area or BBQ area or while camping. This age group is our favourite to entertain. The games and activities are designed to be physically challenging, but they can be easily adapted to suit each individual party or event. Many of the games can be modified to play at home. 1. THE FLOOR IS LARVA Half the kids start upstairs, the other half start downstairs. The kids must try to climb around the entire GymBus without touching the floor. 2. NINJA RELAYS Two obstacle courses are mapped out starting upstairs, using the equipment on the bus, through the downstairs level and back to the top. The kids are divided into 2 teams.One at a time, each team member sets off to complete the course. The first team finished wins. 3. GYMBUS SOCK WRESTLING In pairs or threes, each player puts a sock on one foot. On ‘GO’, the kids try to get their opponents sock off. Start with a Plan Select a committee with like-minded people, discuss dates, themes, objectives, a budget, atimeline, marketing and write up a plan . Delegate tasks, to either individuals or small groups of 2 or 3 committee members, monitor the plan and record the details for future reference. Having a common goal like refurbishing the playground, will keep the school community motivated. What’s in a Name? Although the event might be the annual ‘school fete’ with usual content like food stalls, bric a brac, and amusement rides, the name of your event should reflect the theme and suggest fun and excitement. For example, seasonal names like Spring Fair, in the evening, Twilight Fair or Sundowner. Other suggestions – Funfair, Funfest, Carnival. Just be sure it lives up to its name and be wary of using terms like Monster or Mega Fair unless that’s what it is going to be! 1. The Committee – choose your committee carefully with one chief, 3 sub chiefs and at least 6 Indians. The chief overseas the entire event from start to finish, the sub chiefs head-up various sub-committees for example, one sub-committee takes care of finding and booking the amusements, one for advertising, one for food and so on. The Indians do all the legwork. Delegate tasks with a completion date and following up to make sure they have be done on time. 2. The Theme – decide on a theme in the early stages, as this will determine the direction of many other decisions, like the season, time of day, type of amusements etc. 3. The Date – Get the Indians to thoroughly research other events in your area that may conflict and compete. If your school is on the same property as a church for example, make sure there isn’t a wedding or mass on at the same time as the fete. You could find amusements are hard to get, or it could impact on attendance and therefore profits if there is...
